Episode 113 – Not Your Granddaddy's Narwhal

Nagual Sighting (500 x 500).jpg

In this installment of August Around the World, things are getting every bit as spooky and mythology-y (?) as they are Latin American!

An extra-interrupty Jake infects Wyatt’s mind with cetacean madness while the latter tries to tell the tale of a shape-shifting monstrosity known for terrorizing dark corners of northern Mexico since pre-Columbian times. Said to be what happens when black magic practitioners turn themselves into hellish pseudo-animals, these naguales sure do have a colorful horoscope.

Then, in a segment so connected you’d think it was planned that way even though these hosts most definitely don’t have the wherewithal, Jake introduces the cadejo. If this Mesoamerican monster dog sounds familiar in a British kind of way (or indeed British in a familiar kind of way), then isn’t that something! Spooky tales AND cross-cultural folkloric common themes? What a podcast!

Let’s just put a moratorium on all non-indigenous usage of the term “spirit animal” from here on out, shall we? Great. And while we’re at it, let’s gesture religiously into the air, protect the monkey, and check out this ep of Superduperstitious!
